We loved it. Didn't have molasses on hand, used more worcestershire and replaced red wine vinegar with apple cider vinegar simply because that's what I had.

I thought this recipe was absolutely delicious, and frankly I was a bit skeptical at first! The fresh ingredients made it so much better than all the greasy other recipes I have made. The molasses gave a robust flavor and went very well with the tomato paste and herbs. I would recommend this recipe to anyone for a fresh and simple dinner, and I can not wait to share it with my family!

I've made these many times and my whole family loves them. They taste just like a "real" sloppy joe without all the garbage ingredients. The only change I make is using one teaspoon of dried oregano instead of using fresh oregano. I don't know why people are saying the mushrooms are mushy when using the food processor. I suspect they are over zealous and grinding them to a paste. Just put half the mushrooms in, PULSE gently until finely chopped. Put them in a bowl and repeat with remaining mushrooms.

Definitely sloppy and easy to make! Might take the beef out and cook the onions a little more next time. Simple enough to make again quickly and enjoy again soon.

I've made these twice, and it's an easy meal to pull together. Chopping the mushrooms by hand will yield a less mushy texture. I substituted tomato sauce for the paste on once occasion. And I always up the hot sauce (used Sriracha for a bigger pow factor).

Tastey, but not for us. We have a rating system in our house which is simply 'a do-over', 'a do-over with changes' or 'not a do-over'. We simply decided that if we were going to eat beef, we would prefer a better way of serving it.

I was out of the ingredients I normally make sloppy joes with so I gave this a try. The red wine vinegar was too overpowering for me and the whole flavor was not like the typical flavor I'm used to making. Not bad, but I'll stick with the more traditional homemade sauce.

While I don't care for mushrooms, my hubby loved the sloppy joes. He said it had just the right amount of sweetness and tartness. I used ground turkey instead of ground sirlion and found it to be very tasty. Very quick to make and leftovers can be used for a topper on baked potatoes.

My husband and I didn't like the taste of the oregano, and the hot sauce was way too spicy for me. I'm sure this recipe is fixable -- I just don't know how and there are too many other recipes to try.

Prepared this according to recipe except 1) used dried oregano rather than fresh and 2) chopped up mushrooms by hand into small dice rather than pulsing with FP. My husband and I enjoyed them as a good alternative to full-on joes. Next time, though, I'll add a bit more tomato paste and salt.

My husband and I really disliked this recipe. I agree with the mushy comments. It tasted like some sort of sweet oregano mush. We both agreed that we could only taste the oregano. It was a waste of the beef and mushrooms.

Made these last night after reading previous reviews. We did not use the food processor and instead just chopped the mushrooms to keep them chunky. The rest of the recipe was followed as written, and they were a little bland. We doctored them up with some BBQ sauce, extra salt and pepper, and some paprika to add more flavor. After we doctored them up, they were superb!

Very delish. I didn't use the molasses or the mushrooms and the sloppy joes turned out fabulous. I used bison meat and even the fiance (who loves anything meaty) LOVED them. He didn't even realize they were "healthy" :)

I thought this was fantastic. Had a really unique flavor. I probably added a little extra worcestershire, oregano and hot sauce (used a super hot jalapeno sauce) which may have made the other reviewer's flavor complaints not so for me. I will definitely make again. That said, If you don't have pre chopped mushrooms, onions and garlic, this will definitely take longer than 20 minutes.

I thought this was a great recipe. Like a previous reviewer, I used a full pound of lean beef because that's what I had, perhaps this is the trick, because I did not have any issues with the mushrooms being too soggy. The sauce was the perfect balance of flavors. I severed open faced on whole wheat english muffins and it was a hit.

I'm not a fan of sloppy joes but this was OK. It was super easy which made it even better. Family liked it. I started out doubling it then forgot-so double meat (actually 2 lbs of 93% lean ground beef), double mushrooms but everything else the same as the recipe. The flavor was fine. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be too much if I'd used a pound of meat with all the spices. My kids don't like spice. I pulsed the mushrooms until all pieces were small and didn't think it was mushy at all. I think I will make it again sometime. I like the idea of having a lot of mushrooms disguised in the meat. My kids wouldn't eat them usually.

Made to recipe, chopping the mushrooms, onions, and garlic in small batches. Added about 1/2c Beck's Dark with the tomato paste a bit more chipotle tabasco (to our taste). Served on toasted Miami onion rolls. Good use of reduced-price or older mushrooms.

This is just ok. I took the others advice and only pulsed the mushrooms a few times in my food processor, leaving some larger pieces to cook down and then I let the mix simmer on med-low for about 10 extra minutes to cook off the moisture and the texture came out well. The flavor was, sadly lacking, even though I added some garlic salt at the end. But this can't be hard to adjust. Next time I will definitely spice it up more - maybe add a teaspoon or 2 of mustard. Maybe some ancho chiles...the possibilities are endless. And sometimes that is what is fun about cooking. :-)

This was REALLY good!! A very hearty and healthy version of sloppy joes!! We used the thin sandwich buns for an even healthier meal! SOOO good!!

These sloppy joe's were very satisfying and you didn't feel like you were eating a "light" recipe. Great for an easy dinner during the work week. Plus, kids would like them and I think it's a good opportunity to "hide" some veggies in the beef mixture that they might not normally eat.

I have never liked sloppy joes but I must say I loved these easy joes. I jazzed them up with a little red wine, red pepper flakes. Will make again and again. Served with roasted rosemary baby potatoes and grilled corn on the cob!

As a vegetarian, I'm always looking for ways to make my old meaty favorites. I used Morningstar crumbles and cooked them just like the ground beef with a tad more oil. Pulsing the mushrooms the recommended ten times seemed to work...and they even masked the sometimes chewy texture of the veggie crumbles. My meat eating boyfriend said I could serve them to meat eaters, and they wouldn't know the difference!

This was terrible. I wish I had read the reviews before I made it, but even then, I'm not sure it would have helped. The flavor wasn't tasty, too sweet, not appetizing. I tried to resurrect it by turning it into meat sauce over pasta, but even that wasn't good. Have tried some other good recipes from this magazine issue, but unfortunately this wasn't one of them.

We liked the flavor of this dish, but next time I would slice the mushrooms as thin as I could rather than pulse them. Just too mushy to be attractive looking. Served on a toasted kaiser roll rubbed with garlic.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed this recipe, different from most sloppy joes but good and strong with a nice kick at the end. I would recommend not over doing it with chopping the mushrooms in the food processor. The mushrooms turned a little mushy because I kept them in there too long.

the recipe was great - both my husband and I enjoyed it and I LOVE the original sloppy joes. the mushrooms held up for us, i added a bit more tomato paste (the whole 6oz can), a little more tobasco, dried oregano (1tsp) and 16 oz of hamburger because that's what I had and it seemed like a good balance. We will definitely make again.

I liked that this recipe was quick, and at first glance the mushrooms seemed like a good idea. But they gave the sloppy joes an unappetizing mushy texture. I even cooked them a little longer hoping the moisture would dry up and they'd firm up but they just got pasty. The flavor was good, however, and it was quick to make. I substituted brown sugar for the molasses because I didn't have any.

It took some time to get used to the difference between this recipe and the traditional sloppy joe, but all in all, 4 out of 5 of us enjoyed it. I didn't add as many mushrooms since I was doubling the recipe and it seemed to be too many mushrooms. But, I don't think I added enough garlic. We will have this again. (I also topped it off with some cheese.)
